History of the “Krug” House, 2223 State Street, Alton, Illinois

The Krug House was built by Joseph and Elizabeth Krug in approximately 1862. Joseph Krug came to Alton from Dayton, Ohio in 1859 and purchased an estimated 18 acres. He then went back to Dayton to prepare his wife and three children for the move to Alton. In the years after their move, there were another ten children born to the Krugs. Joseph was known throughout the State of Illinois as a noted Horticulturist. More than an acre of ground behind the home was under glass greenhouses, all of which - including the house - were heated by a very sophisticated boiler system. The Krug floral Shop was located on Broadway in the building that now houses “Cane Bottom My Just Desserts”. Many articles in the local newspaper referred to the Krug grounds as the “Botanical Garden” of Alton.

The Krug House Partnership, consisting of six partners, is the fourth owner of record. The Partnership purchased and began work on the property in the fall of 1996. The purchase included the Krug House as well as approximately nine acres behind the house. Though a long, arduous process, and most surely life consuming, it has been a true labor of love - something that we are proud to share with all in our community.

The Krug House has been home to Thymes Past, A Bistro & Wine Bar, owned and operated by Linda K. Leckrone, since September 1, 1999. Since then, The Krug House has been enjoyed by many people, both local and from across the world. The house has been included in Alton's October Historic House Tour and has also participated in the Pride Holiday House Tour. We look forward to sharing this beautiful home with the public for many years to come.

The artwork, compliments of William Street Gallery, owned and operated by Michael G. Blakely, is available for purchase.
